As obsessed as I am about Instagram and the internet as a whole, it’s not entirely healthy to spend my life watching the fun (and not-so-fun) times of others. It can be anxiety-inducing. Which is why I like to have a few days or weeks where I deactivate my public Instagram account, Twitter and have a mini hiatus from my blog. Why? Well, here are the benefits I have found when taking a social media break.
YOU NEED TO SET YOURSELF BOUNDARIES
Sometimes you just need to pause sharing your life with the world. Even if you only have 235 like I do (come on guys!) it is still out there for the world to see what you are up to. Not only that, but social media exposes you to a high amount of content which can subconsciously make you feel inadequate. Therefore, as an act of self-love, I often have a week or two where I shut it all down for a bit and come back with a fresh mind.
IT CAN BE A DISTRACTION FROM REAL LIFE
Instagram is not real, not matter how people like to perceive it. Even the accounts that admit it’s not real are still selective in a way. You can’t put absolutely everything out there. And it’s important to remember that you are only seeing half the picture of someone’s life when you hit the like button.
Twitter for me is a much more “real” platform as it’s more expressive but I also find it can be quiet damaging if the tweets being put out are that of a negative nature.
If you feel like life revolves around the social media bubble, then turn the phone off, take a step back and enjoy what is around you a bit more. I know, it’s very cliche and surprisingly easier said than done. But you need to appreciate the time you have for yourself instead of watching what others are doing and trying to keep up.

YOUR COMEBACK WILL FEEL FRESHER AND STRONGER
I always feel like when I get back to posting I become more selective and better at what I post. Whether other people do is a different story and I couldn’t care less. Because your platforms should be about YOU and YOUR self-expression.
In addition to posting more for myself, I also have a little cleanse of who I am following to see if they are “where I am at” if you get what I mean.
Even if it’s just for a day or a weekend, break up with your social media accounts. TAKE A BREAK and just enjoy life. See if you can buy a pretty cake without snapping it!
