ASMR is a trend that has swept Youtube by storm. I discovered it when I was heavily pregnant and finding it hard to sleep 😴 , let alone relax. I used meditation and found that I really enjoyed the sounds of whispering, soft talking and gentle sounds. Turns out what I was after was ASMR.
In 2020, I started finding sleep hard again so returned to my love of these videos as they are both visual and sound. I tend to watch one to relax and then listen to another to help me drift off. The amount of times I have fallen asleep with my headphones in is shocking.
BUT WHAT IS ASMR?
According to Wikipedia…
Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), sometimes auto sensory meridian response, is a tingling sensation that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. A pleasant form of paresthesia, it has been compared with auditory-tactile synesthesia and may overlap with frisson.
ASMR signifies the subjective experience of “low-grade euphoria” characterized by “a combination of positive feelings and a distinct static-like tingling sensation on the skin”. It is most commonly triggered by specific auditory or visual stimuli, and less commonly by intentional attention control. A genre of videos which intend to induce ASMR has emerged, of which by 2018 over 13 million are published on YouTube.
Okay so now you know!
ASMR videos and audio are there to give you “tingles” a wonderful feeling, unrelated to sex. Honestly, some of the videos can come across as sexual but it’s not intended that way. It’s more that those sounds and actions are related to tingles and thus related to sex. Not sure that makes sense but 🤷♀️ Some people get them, some don’t. And I feel sorry for the latter.
Some ASMRtists do BIZARRE things in their videos. But I’m not a fan of hearing someone eat, mouth clicking whilst talking or nibbling *shudders* I just find some things irritating and anything to do with mouths is a little too disturbing to my ears 🤣
For me the best ASMR videos include:
- Hair brushing
- Hair washing
- Gentle tapping
- Slow and soft hand movements with or without objects
Don’t ask me where this comes from but I am certainly not alone.
MY FAVOURITE ASMR VIDEOS
I am incredibly picky about who I listen to. I have about 3 favourite Youtubers and I listen to their videos constantly. Here are a few favourite.
Maria broke my ASMR virginity. She is so sweet, inventive and really works hard to create new and relaxing videos. Not sure I’ve ever finished one as I always drift off before the end. Her accent really helps me, not sure why I just feel so looked after 😆
I don’t just watch Julia’s ASMR videos, I watch them all! I love her voice whether it’s for her ASMR or day to day life. And her face, UGH so gorgeous (they all are). Julia is someone I would love to know personally as I feel she would sort my life out hahaha
I watch all the massage ones. There’s not one favourite.
This account is rather new to me. I only discovered this account recently and I am BLOWN AWAY with the story arcs and production of the videos. So much research and detail have clearly been considered. I use these videos to relax as opposed to falling asleep as I want to watch them all the way through simply for the stunning videos. I love this type of LARP videos makes me feel like I’m in Middle Earth or something. I’m a fan of Lord of the Rings etc. so this style suits me wonderfully.
Give it a try. It will be a weird experience at first… But I promise you’ll get addicted!
